Stars and Hand prints

We are all very involved in being stars this week and love wearing our ‘star clothing’ that we made. Some of us even wear dark glasses so that the paparazzi don’t recognize us! We started off our day looking at stars and we didn’t realize that stars can be really different in shape. While most of them have five points the angle of the points is really different. If you look carefully at the photos of us cutting them out, you may be able to see the different shapes. We also looked at one that had eight points and Lanah said that it looked like the sun to her.We cut out a star and then decorated it with coloured markers. When we were finished

decorating them, we pasted them onto a piece of thick, hard cardboard and looked for a photo of our faces. Our teachers cut the stars out as the cardboard was too hard for us to cut out and then we pasted our faces in the middle of the stars. We decorated them with sparkly glitter which made us have sparkly hands and a sparkly classroom. We will add some yarn or other string to our stars tomorrow so that we can wear them as

necklaces.

At the second activity table Hisami worked with some of our friends so that they could make their “star outfits”. Michaela wanted to be Minnie Mouse, Sofie was a princess and Daiki was Mickey Mouse. Their costumes were fabulous and you can see from the photos that they added quite a lot of detail so that they could look the part.

We have loved the theme “I am a star” this week and are excited because tomorrow we will be decorating a huge piece of paper that has a picture of Elsa on and Lightning McQueen. Most of us asked our teachers if we can have the picture of Elsa but they said that it is for the whole class to share. All the girls in our class love Elsa so it would not be fair if one of us took it. Later in the morning we did another activity. In order to understand what we were going to do, in relation to being a star, we stood with Shelley at the computer and saw stars on the ground with people’s

names on them. We saw Mickey Mouse’s name inside a star with the picture of a camera. We looked for Elsa but she doesn’t have a star. She is not so famous, even though most of us want to be her. When we were talking about who we would like to be, Shelley said that she just wants to be herself and so did Michaela.

So going back to the stars in Hollywood, we decided to make our own stars and handprints, out of clay. We used paper clay which is really light

and we first squeezed it; then we rolled it into a ball and flattened it. We pushed our hands as hard as we could into the play dough so that we could leave an imprint. Shelley helped push our fingers down, so that we could see the finger shape in the end. When we took our hand off the play dough, we saw our hands and said that they looked like Mickey Mouse hands; because they were white. We then took a star shaped play dough cutter and cut out a heart. So now we have our hand imprint as well as a star. Tomorrow we are going to mount them on a piece of

paper, with the star and our faces. We can’t believe that we are doing things just like famous people in movies or singers do.

We looked through the grating on our balcony and saw our friends from Buds Class painting. We love hearing the laughter and joy from all of our friends at school each day. Thanks for a fabulous day being stars. See you tomorrow!
