'J'aime la galette'

Bonjour! This week we’re traveling to different countries each day and today we traveled to France. We learned how to say “bonjour,” count from one to ten and introduce our names by saying, “Je m’appelle….” We also made crepes with banana and rainbow sprinkles! Today we had a new friend in class. DSCF7988Kosei first started making a French flag using blue, white and red paper tissues along with his other friends, Taylor, Jessica, Noa, Ava, Blue and Jennifer. First, we tore colored tissue paper into small pieces and stuck them on to a piece of paper with three fat stripes- from right to left, we stuck the pieces of tissue red, white and blue. Taylor and Noa were at the ‘kitchen corner’ which Sharee had kindly set up for us this morning – after all, we had brought down the kitchen set for the baby’s class so instead we used a small cabinet to put the plates, cups and cutlery inside and at the top, Sharee had placed a piece of paper with circles on it to look like a cooker, with two pieces of wood sticking out like buttons on a cooker. On the big table, Ava, Jessica, Jeremy, Arata and Jennifer enjoying baking heart shaped cookies. DSCF7998On the same table, there was a glassed board with salt, glitter, food coloring and lavender oil mixed. We used forks, spoons, a stick and even our hands to touch, add texture and make patterns on the board. It took some time until one of our friends, Jennifer was able to guess that the blue texture was salt. DSCF8004We realized that there are actually many things we can use from our usual cooking ingredients that we can play with creatively. For our circle time, we read a book called, My Five Senses and then we talked about our five senses – our eyes are for looking, hands for touching, ears for hearing, mouth for tasting and nose for smelling. Today, we explored about our sense of smell. First using our nose, we tried to guess what was inside the five containers, each with a different ingredient inside, all covered with black paper so that we wouldn’t be able to see the inside. It was not easy to guess because some had no particular smell – Ava guessed there was sugar in one container, Jeremy guessed oil for another container. DSCF8017When Ava had a second try for a different container, she was able to guess the coffee beans! But we still don’t know what is inside the other four containers so let’s try and find out using our other four senses. We then took turns to grind the coffee beans and for some friends the smell was a bit too strong! After we came back from the park, we counted the coffee beans in French, then we counted the number of friends in French – un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix. DSCF8020We sang a song called, “Bonjou Mes Amis” and learnt how to say our names. Then we sang another song on crepe called, “J’aime la galette” which goes like this: I like crepe. How do you like it? I like it when it’s made well with butter inside. So, we did put butter inside our crepe! First we sifted one cup of flour, one teaspoon sugar, and ¼ teaspoon salt. In a big bowl, we beat two eggs and two cups of milk. We put the flour mixture inside the bowl and beat it until the batter was smooth and then stirred in two tablespoons of butter.DSCF8021 Then we were ready to start heating the batter and put sliced bananas and sprinkled rainbow chocolate inside each of our own crepes! Bon appetite! All our Love, Nanako, Sharee and Darren
