Ohana Iron Chefs - Italy - Pizza

Our last day of travelling on our Ohana Iron Chefs tour was to Italy. Bonjorno amici! This means ‘good morning friends’ and it truly was a “bella matina” which means a ‘beautiful morning’. We travelled with Nanako to Italy and we started off by singing “Heads and Shoulders” in Italian. We learnt some words in Italian e.g. head – testa, shoulders – spale, knees – gjinochi, toes – piedi. We sang our good morning song DSCF6093and went around our huge circle of friends and teachers singing our names. It took a really long time. We counted in Italian from one to ten – uno, due, ture, quarto, chinko, sei, sette, otto, nove, di’eti. When we learnt how to count in Italian, Nanako was so clever and she used “pomodoro” which is the Italian name for tomatoes and they were one of the ingredients that we used for ourOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA pizza.

All of us had a turn to be chefs and spread the “pomodori” on the pizza together with grated cheese and then some sprigs of rosemary. Nanako’s mum grows rosemary in her garden. It has a beautiful smell and interesting taste. We then put the pizzas in the oven for 15 minutes and in total, we baked three pizzas. They came out OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAsmelling so wonderful and we couldn’t wait to taste them. We first sat down with our own snacks while Nanako cut the circular shaped pizzas into triangular pieces. Some of us were so happy as there was enough for us to have two helpings. Yummm!

We had three more activities to do with our friends. The first one was using pink play dough with raw spaghetti sticks and beads. We put the sticks into the play dough and then we threaded beads onto them. We had to be really careful as the raw spaghetti is fragile. The beads were colourful and shiny and the DSCF6067dough was such a lovely pink colour. The second activity that we had was making the Italian flag which has three vertical stripes. The left is green, the middle is white and the right side is red. We coloured the stripes in and then attached a chop stick for the flagpole and now we have one flag for each of the five countries that we visited this week. We have learnt so many new languages this past week and have enjoyed everything soooo much. But wait, the final DSCF6102activity that we did was with coloured cooked spaghetti. The spaghetti was not for eating. We put different coloured paints on the spaghetti and mixed the paint with the spaghetti with our hands. It felt stringy and soft. Downstairs, we made patterns on our pages with the spoaghetti while upstairs we did something a little more complicated. Earlier in the morning we used sponges and paint and dabbed around the letters of our names. When we returned from the park, we glued the coloured spaghetti on the positive shapes which were the actual letters. You can see what we mean from the photos.DSCF6065
