What Happens to Plastic on the Beach?

April, 12th 2024

CIRCLE TIME

We opened our 100 Things About Earth book to learn something new! The books said that recently a new type of rock has been discovered! What could it be made of?

Ei: Rock!? It’s just looks like an old pile of rubbish!

Th: Is it plastic?

Yu: It’s made out of plastic.

The book told us that this rock is called plastiglomerate. It’s a rock that is formed in fires or hot weather, when plastic melts together with sand, shells, and pebbles on the beach.

Ei: No one has seen that type of rock before!

How did plastic end up at the beach.

Co: The water bring it. It’s going to the ground and then to the ocean.

We were reminded of the conversation we had earlier this week about plastic.

Th: My mommy use every day plastic bags.

Ei: My mommy use a shopping bag, but they’re not made out of plastic.

Mi: My daddy has an eco bag.

We tried to think what an eco bag is made of…

Ke: It’s made out of eco!

What is eco?

Th: Eco means that when you talk to it, it talks back!

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Ty and Yu read our question today.

“Do you know what climate mean?”

To figure out what climate means, we started by reviewing everything we know about weather. Each day our calendar helper tells which day it is and what the weather is like. We had excellent ideas about how the weather might be rainy in Tokyo, but sunny in other parts of the world.

Sh: The clouds are always moving!

We thought that climate might be something like that. Weather changing constantly around the world. Re thought that climate might mean some areas of the world raining all the time, and others being sunny all the time.

HOMEWORK

Our homework for this weekend, is to see what we can find out about climate and figure out what eco bags are made of.

Have a wonderful weekend! See you next week!
