What do Forest Animals Eat?

Happy Sunny Wednesday!

It is a very special day for us! Some of us arrived at school dressed very nicely! We had our special outfits because it was Yearbook Photo Day! We went up to the office, and the professional photographers set up a wonderful studio and took our photos! “Cheese!”, “Ohana!”, we said as we tried our best to smile in front of the camera. We had a bit longer free play time because we had to wait for Shelley and Maryna to call us up for the photo shoot.

We started our circle time with a review from yesterday. Sayaka showed us some of the forest animals and asked us the names of the animals.

L: Raccoon

M: Hedgehog

M: Moose

J: Owl

Then Sayaka asked us to take a guess on what these animals eat for food, “Do you know what they eat? Do you think they eat food like the ones we eat or different food for forest animals?

Y: Bread.

J: Eat bananas.

M: Eat their own food, not children’s food.

R: Grass or other animals.

Sayaka: Thank you for the ideas! We are going to talk about it today. By the way, do you know where the forest animals live?

Y: Forest.

N: I went camping in the forest.

J: In Vancouver, I went to a forest.

R: I went to a forest and saw a bear, it didn’t make any sound.

Sayaka showed us pictures of the forest and asked us what we saw in it.

J: Lots of trees.

Petals: Green!

M: And brown.

Then Sayaka showed pictures of the food for the forest animals.

Bears eat berries, roots, salmon, and nuts. Sayaka asked us what we saw in the picture.

M: Acorns!

Skunks eat mice, eggs, frogs, and insects.

M: Mouse

N: Stinky one!

Moose eat bark, willows, grass, and leaves.

Petals wondered what “bark” could be. Sayaka explained that bark is the skin of a tree and showed us a real one!

Owl eat birds, mice, frogs, and insects

Y: Owl! Hoot hoot..!

M: Why they only eat animals?

Deer eat grass, forbs, nuts, and mushrooms

R: Deer eat grass

Y: I don’t eat peanuts! *Then he scratched his neck.

Foxes eat rodents, rabbits, birds, and frogs

L: Fox!

R: They also eat bunnies.

Raccoons eat eggs, fruit, seeds, and insects

L: Racoon!

Hedgehogs eat mealworms, crickets, fruits, and cooked meat.

Sayaka asked us if we want to crickets or some insects. Petals shook his head sad, “Noooo!” Then Sayaka asked Nimo if he had tried to ask some insects. Nimo nodded his head and he said, “It was crunchy and yummy!” Sayaka seemed like she didn't want to try tasting it. Some Petals said, “Hmmm…not for me!”

We had a simple and fun matching game before we got ready for snack.

Sayaka had a basket full of food toys, like a toy mouse, an egg, an apple, and a whole lot of others. Sayaka took one from the basket and asked us if we knew what animal ate the food. She handed us the toy and we placed it on the picture of the animal. Sayaka reminded us to raise our hand if we knew the answer. Sayaka started with the mouse.

Thank you very much petals class! Now we have some ideas about what food they eat.

After we had snack, we realized that we didn’t have enough time to go to the park. We decided to have a story time then take a quick walk to the park. The book title for today was, “IF YOU GIVE A MOOSE A MUFFIN” by Laura Numeroff illustrated by Felicia Bond. Now we know moose don’t eat muffins, we said. “Muffin? No moose!” Then Sayaka reviewed what they eat. They eat bark, willows, grass, and leaves. We were right, they don’t eat muffins. Do we like muffins? Yes, we love muffins haha!

Thank you very much for a wonderful day! See you all tomorrow.

Love,

Petals
