The tadpole went looking for its mother

Winnie the Pooh: Christopher Robin! I think it would help with this deception if you would just kind of open your umbrella and say, "Tut-tut, it looks like rain."Christopher Robin: Tut-tut, it looks like rain. Tut-tut, it looks like rain.

Today at school it rained and rained and rained. The good thing about the rain is that our seeds were getting plenty of water and maybe when we return to school on Monday 2nd May, we will see some shoots and leaves. In fact, all of our plants on the Discovery Deck and those on Flowers Class balcony are getting plenty of nourishment. Flowers Class have pumpkins growing on their balcony as well as some seeds that will become flowers.

Today we sat at a table with Shelley and discussed what we wanted to draw. We had white paper, erasers and lead pencils. So we chose flowers, cars, people and butterflies and together we drew these things. As we drew we chatted and Shelley drew together with us. We produced really interesting results however how we got to the end product was a wonderful learning experience. When we had

completed drawing the pictures that we wanted to, we coloured them in with coloured pencils. Our teachers packed all of the markers away because they feel that if we are going to learn about pencil control and how to draw with proper pressure and strength, we need to use pencils and coloured pencils. When you draw with a marker, you don’t even need to hold it properly, in order to draw something. These drawings will go straight into our portfolio/workbooks so that they are ready as gifts for our families at our End of the Year Party.

We sat and made “kabuto” out of newspaper. The newspaper was just like a piece of origami except that it was much bigger. Hisami drew a circle at each point so that we knew which parts needed to be matched. We did a lot of ironing with our hands to smooth the edges and corners. We folded many points and then created a “kabuto” which we enjoyed wearing. Once we had created the shape we used stickers to decorate it. We are almost ready for “Kodomo no hi” and next week, our friends who have not yet made their “kabuto”, will make them.

We sat together on the carpet and changed our calendar and then we successfully counted all of our friends who were in school today. We went around the circle counting one by one. We looked at our tadpoles again and fed them with a few sprinkles of “katsuobushi” and we added some water and took some water out of the container. Then we went onto the large carpet and curled up into tiny seeds. Our teachers sprinkled water on us so that we would grow and then they let the sun shine on us too. We sang “It’s raining it’s pouring”, “Rain rain go away”, “Ame, dear ame fall from the sky”.  Then the seeds started to grow and we sang “I am a little flower”. We grew into beautiful flowers and then held hands with a friend and danced around together.

Sharee told us a fabulous story similar to “Are you my mother?” It was all about a tadpole who was looking for its mother but the mother didn’t look like he/she. The tadpole went all around the pond, looking up at many animals but none of them was the mother. We all had an animal in our hands and the tadpole swam up to us and asked: “Are you my mother?” and we said: “No I am not your mother, I am a ……..” we were a tiger, lion, dinosaur, elephant, mouse, monkey etc. Eventually a frog came and gave the tadpole some food and before long, it had turned into a frog. That’s what we called “metamorphosis”. We don’t go through a metamorphosis because we look like our parents when we are little; we just become a bigger person. Tadpoles don’t become adults, they become frogs.

We are watching and waiting to see when there is a frog in our classroom!

We want to wish all of our friends a happy Golden Week and travel safely wherever you go.

Love always, all the children in Petals Class.
