Oh Mr. Sun sun Mr. Golden sun

Hello, hello, hello……..there is always something happening in our classroom on the first floor, separate from our regular school day. Today we welcomed Yuriko and Momo chan and a little baby. They came to see Ohana and enjoyed spending time with us, sharing snack time with us and also enjoying dressing up in the home corner. Our morning started off with making more birthday hearts and talking about what we would like to wish our teachers for their birthdays. We are having lots of DSCF3148lengthy conversations in our class each day as our language is developing more and more. An interesting thing happened when we were having story time; we listened to and helped Shelley read the book called “Baby bear, baby bear, what do you see”. Then at the very end we said: “Shelley, Shelley, what do you see?” and she said: “I see children looking at me”. Then she said: “Children, children what do you see?” and we were not sure what to say. Some of us said “a frog” and then Shelley asked us: “Am I a frog?” and of course we know she isn’t. Then we had another interesting moment, we were talking about who is a girl and who is a boy in the class and then Shelley said: “I am a girl” and we said: “No, you are Shelley”.DSCF3160

During the morning, we played with the wax strips and on the table we had a huge number of plastic, coloured cups. We squeezed the strips into balls and placed them in the matching cups. Then we took them out and mixed them into other cups. At the very end we tried to unravel them and make them into long strips again. We spent time in the dressing up corner and each day we have a few princesses in the class together with a man with a red hat, someone with an orange Halloween hat and many people with necklaces.

Today we sang “Mr. Sun, please shine down on me”; “Good morning Mr. Sun” and “Twinkle, twinkle little star”. We didn’t DSCF3159practice singing our canon today but will keep on doing it until we celebrate the end of the year party with our families.

Upstairs, we moved our penguin families onto one of the ledges of our room divider and continued working on our bird theme. When FJ arrived at school this morning, she took materials out of the junk art box and built something. Once the rest of us saw the junk art box, we all wanted to make something. We took out glue, markers, tape and scissors. FJ made a robot, Jennifer made a machine and Miya made a chocolate machine. Sean completed the wooden layered puzzle that has different parts of the body on it. This puzzle was great when we were learning about the lungs during KIDFIT. Margo, Sophie and Emily caught up on making hearts during free play time for their friends and teachers. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Emily and Sophie also made their origami penguins. They made a mum and child penguin. We went to the park earlier today so that we would miss the really hot sunshine. We took our water bottles with us so that we could stay hydrated all the time. Our teachers sometimes remind us to get something to drink as we become so engrossed in our play; we forget that we need to drink water.

When we returned to school we read “Fox in Socks” and looked for pages in the book that had the letter “b” on them. We looked for words that started with the “b” sound. We found baby, beetle, OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAbottle, battle etc. Then there were some other fun sounding rhyming words that we read. They went like this: Tweetle, beetle, puddle, paddle, battle, and muddle.

In the Sesame Street Question and Answer Book, we looked at the bird page again and again and we discovered some new information about egg. We found a picture of a bird called a hummingbird and learnt that it lays the smallest egg of all birds. The egg is so small; it is the size of a raisin. We can’t imagine that a baby bird can be so small and hatch out of a raisin sized egg. Jenny noticed that the illustrations of the eggs were different colours so we went to the activity table and continued decorating our eggs with stickers and markers.
