Do Bears Hibernate?

Happy Wednesday! Winter School is more than half over now, with tomorrow being our final day. It’s been such a great week so far!

MORNING ACTIVITIES

This morning, we made little bears to hibernate in the caves we made yesterday. We cut strips of paper and taped them together in a cylindrical shape. We made arch-shaped cuts with our scissors to form the legs. We put a crease in the legs to give the indication of little paws, then drew and cut out the head.

Most of us wanted to make polar bears, but Hi asked to make a brown bear! Some of our bears were a bit big to fit in their cave, but we made some adjustments so that they could be comfortable during their long winter nap!

We also completed our snowman craft from yesterday by using white paint to surround them with falling snow!

PARK TIME

Although it was still a bit chilly, the sun was out, so we decided to go to the park! We enjoyed playing with the ropes that we brought and the balls that Buds class brought with them. We had fun playing with our friends and teachers from all of the classes today, chasing each other, throwing balls, and making up games! It’s always good to get outside!

CIRCLE TIME

Two friends asked to share something with the class to begin our circle time.

Ke brought a bag full of acorns! He passed them around and we tried to open them. They were difficult to open at first, until Ei discovered that if we step on them, they will crack, allowing us to pry them open with our hands!

Mi: Where did you find your acorns?
Ke: Mount Fuji.

Th: Why did you get acorns from Mount Fuji?
Ke: Because I want to share!

What was inside the acorns?

Ke: The inside the acorn is…I don’t know.
Th: There’s no acorn inside, but it has a very tiny seed. If you plant it, it will turn into an acorn.

Next, our friend Yu had something to share!

Yu: This is my tooth! I was running and I fell, but I don’t know where I broke my teeth.

Ta: My mommy said, “teeth fall, but other teeth will grown.” New and big teeth will come out.

Mi: Why did you break your teeth?
Yu: I don’t know.

Th: Why dentist pull out your teeth?
Yu: I don’t know.

Thank you both for sharing!

Question of the Day

We all pitched in to read our question together today.

"Do bears sleep all winter?"

Th mentioned that there were 2 “D’s” in the sentence; the “D” in “Do” and the “b” in “bears.” We asked a few friends if they could write “d” and “b” on the board so that we could compare them.

It is tricky to tell them apart, but once they were on the board, we could see the difference. That helped us better understand the sounds they make.

Getting back to our question, most of us thought that bears sleep all through the winter, because they get “lunch” before going into their cave.

We looked through one of our books on bears to see if we could learn more. We could see what the inside of a bears home might look like.

Th: Some bears live under the tree and polar bears live under the snow.

We saw a drawing of a mother bear nursing her cubs.

Ei: Cub is a baby bear.
Hi: Is a bear a mammal? I think bear is a mammal.

After learning about what bears do during the winter, we tried to remember the big word we learned yesterday that defines this long nap. We were given a hint that it starts with /h/.

Th: Hibernation

Tomorrow we will learn about what some different animals do during winter. We talked a bit about the word yesterday. Who remembers?

Hi: Miberation.
Ei: Pieberation.
Mi: Migration!

Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow for the final day of Winter School 2023!

Love,
Flowers XOXO
